HDU Mourns the Loss of Founding Board Member, Pat Colongione

For Immediate Release October 11, 2017:

Shepherdstown, WV.   Home Dialyzors United (HDU) is mourning the loss of one of its founding Board Members. Following a short battle with cancer, Patricia M. Jarocki Colongione, 74, of Cohoes  NY, died Monday, October 9, 2017, with her family by her side.

Pat was a member of the Women’s Committee of #691 CSEA, WITS – Workers in Travel, the Patient and Services Committee of the National Kidney Foundation and the WE Organization at HVCC. She was the co-founder and Treasurer of Home Dialyzers United, a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire, inform, and advocate for an extraordinary quality of life for the dialysis community.

For the last 14 years she spoke to the new nurses at Hudson Valley Community College regarding home hemodialysis.  On September 27, 2017 she was honored by the Hudson Valley Community College Nursing Department with an Honorary Nursing Practice Certificate and pin for her extraordinary commitment to community health.  She was a communicant of Transfiguration Parish formerly St. Bonaventure’s Church in Speigletown.

Pat was a care partner for her husband Ralph, who did home hemodialysis until his death in 2010. During that time they cruised to Mexico, and travelled extensively. In 2007 Pat began her advocacy work for the home dialysis community as one of the founding Board Members of Home Dialyzors United. After Ralph’s death, Pat continued her work with Home Dialyzors United, as Treasurer and Board Member, travelling across the country to meetings, conferences, and programs promoting home dialysis. She made many trips to Washington DC to meet with Congress, CMS, the FDA, GAO, and other organizations to discuss the rights of renal patients.

In honor of her dedication to the home dialysis community and her advocacy work with Home Dialyzors United, the Board recently voted to initiate an award to be given to the unsung heroes who work tirelessly to improve the lives of all dialyzors. Named the Colongione Award, Pat will be its first recipient and her family will receive the award at a future date.

Please join HDU in mourning the loss of a truly dedicated advocate. http://www.brycefuneralhome.com/notices/Patricia-Colongione
