Home Dialyzors United Congratulates NxStage and Fresenius on Their Merger.

Davenport Iowa. Home Dialyzors United (HDU) is pleased to congratulate Nxstage and Fresenius on its proposed merger. As strong supporters of optimal dialysis and home therapies, HDU agrees that the goals of the merger will provide an unprecedented opportunity to further our common objectives:

• further enhance clinical outcomes and patient empowerment
• support strategic initiative of vertical integration and Care Coordination

HDU has teamed up with NxStage in the past to promote home hemodialysis, nocturnal dialysis and optimal dialysis, and looks forward to continuing that support while extending our assistance to Fresenius throughout the transition.

HDU agrees with Rice Powell, Chairman and CEO of Fresenius Medical Care, that “the acquisition supports our 2020 strategic initiative of driving growth in the core business with innovation, better clinical outcomes through Care Coordination and improving the patient experience. Combining our two companies would strengthen and diversify our business in the U.S. and help meet the evolving needs of our patients.”

Jeff Burbank, Founder and CEO of NxStage Medical, Inc. voices a similar viewpoint: “The combination of Fresenius Medical Care’s industry leadership with NxStage’s innovative products and employees has the potential to significantly advance the standard of care for patients around the world. Fresenius Medical Care would like us to continue doing what we do best, and a lot more of it. I strongly believe our opportunities would be greater working together for the benefit of patients, customers and shareholders.”

Fresenius already has a financial interest in AWAK, a developer of advanced dialysis equipment technology, and HDU believes that their merger with NxStage can only serve to fuel further advances and development. Research and Development of new technology is expensive, and by combining resources, HDU would hope that new, patient friendly technology is that much closer to becoming a reality for home dialyzors.

Further, Fresenius, as a multinational company with a worldwide reach, can only improve the international pipeline for Nxstage products, hopefully improving the opportunity for worldwide travel for dialyzors.

Home Dialyzors is excited about the opportunities provided by this merger, and looks forward to the transformation of the delivery of home dialysis care in the U.S. We stand ready to support both companies to continue to improve the outcomes of dialyzors everywhere, and especially those who choose the home therapies.

Home Dialyzors United (HDU), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is the only dialysis patient group dedicated to home dialysis. We believe that patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and their families and care partners can lead a normal life, enjoying family and friends and pursuing employment, education, volunteer, and leisure activities. We further believe that Congress, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which pays the largest share of the costs of dialysis treatment, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates devices used in dialysis, all have a role to play in eliminating the barriers that prevent more individuals with ESRD from getting optimal care.
